Why is reading so hard with ADHD?
Reading a long text asks you to hold what you just read while taking in the next sentence, and to keep your attention on a page that does not change to hold it. CHADD's Attention magazine describes how limited working memory can make it harder to hold enough text to build a big picture. (CHADD) And spontaneous mind wandering, the kind you do not choose, is closely tied to ADHD symptoms. (Seli et al., 2015) Full answer: How to read with ADHD.
Why do I read a page and remember nothing?
Your eyes kept moving while your attention left. It is common and fixable: shorter sessions, a pause to say what just happened, and audio for the hard parts. Reading but not processing has the full routine.
Do audiobooks count as reading?
Yes. In a study of adults with a nonfiction book, comprehension was similar for reading, listening, and both together. (Rogowsky et al., 2016) The study was not about ADHD. Full answer: Do audiobooks count as reading? and Audiobooks for ADHD.
How do I remember what happened in a book?
Put memory on paper. Two lines at the end of each session, a short cast list, and a recap before you return after a gap. Recalling what you read tends to help it stick better than rereading. (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006) See Why you forget what you read, Externalize the plot and the cast list template.
How do I get back into a book I stopped halfway?
Decide between three restarts: read your notes and carry on, use a recap that stops at your page, or start over if you genuinely want to. For supported Kindle ebooks, Story So Far recaps up to where you stopped. (Amazon) For print, ebook or audio copies of its supported titles on iPhone, Magic Bookmark does the same, per book after a free first one. (App Store) Full method: Coming back to a book you abandoned.
Is it okay to quit books?
Yes. A book that drags can stall your reading for weeks. Quitting early protects the habit. The DNF rule explains how to quit without guilt, and How do you choose a book that holds ADHD attention? helps you pick the next one.
What are the best tools for reading with ADHD?
It depends on where reading breaks for you. Text-to-speech and audiobooks for getting through text; an e-reader for fewer distractions; a read-it-later app for articles; a tracker if logging motivates you; and recap and memory tools for keeping the thread. The toolkit scores them against one published rubric, with a flag on each score that tells you how deep the review went.
Does bionic reading help ADHD?
Independent testing has not shown that it improves reading speed or comprehension in general. Some people still like how it feels. Does bionic reading work? has the details.
How do I read more with ADHD?
Make sessions smaller and easier to start, not longer. Ten minutes at the same time each day, a book that pulls you, and a log without streaks. Spreading reading out tends to help memory too. (Cepeda et al., 2006) See Build a reading habit with ADHD and the printable reading log.
How do I keep reading a long series?
Keep one line per finished book, a cast list, and read a spoiler-free recap before each new one. Avoid fan wikis, which spoil later books. See Reading a long series with ADHD and the series tracker.

Questions
Why is reading hard with ADHD?
- Long reading leans on working memory and on keeping attention on an unchanging page. Both are areas where many people with ADHD have less room, so attention drifts and the thread drops.
Can people with ADHD enjoy reading?
- Yes. Many do, often by changing the format, shortening sessions, choosing books that pull, and quitting books that do not.
Do audiobooks count as reading for ADHD?
- Yes. Research with adults found similar comprehension for reading, listening, or both. Use whatever format gets you through the book.
How do I stop forgetting what I read?
- Write two lines at the end of each session, keep a short cast list for novels, and read a recap or your notes before you continue after a gap.
Is it bad to quit a book with ADHD?
- No. Quitting a book that is not working protects your reading habit. Choose the next book with a short test instead of forcing fifty pages.
Is this site medical advice?
- No. It covers reading habits and tools. For diagnosis or treatment, talk to a qualified clinician.
