What is Kindle's Ask this Book, and should ADHD readers use it?

Ask this Book lets you highlight a passage in a Kindle ebook and ask about plot, characters or themes, with answers limited to your current position by default. It arrived on the Kindle iOS app in the US in December 2025. For ADHD readers it can answer "who is this again?" without leaving the page, but one setting widens answers to the whole book, and the Authors Guild says authors cannot opt out.

What does Ask this Book do?

Amazon describes Ask this Book as a reading assistant that answers questions about plot details, character relationships and themes. You open it from the in-book menu or by highlighting a passage, then tap a suggested question or type your own, and you can ask follow-ups. Answers cover the story up to your current reading position, "but you can also choose to ask questions about the entire book." (Amazon)

Where and when is it available?

Good e-Reader reported on 14 December 2025 that Ask this Book was available on the Kindle app for iOS in the US. (Good e-Reader) Amazon's own page, last updated 2 July 2026, says it is on the Kindle iOS app in the US and will expand to Kindle devices and the Android app, across thousands of best-selling English-language ebooks you have bought or borrowed. (Amazon)

Why do authors object?

The Authors Guild published a statement on 23 December 2025, updated 7 January 2026. It said the feature was added without permission from publishers or authors, that "there is no way for publishers or authors to opt their books out of the feature," and that uses like this "must be licensed and compensated." (Authors Guild)

We are not taking a legal position here. If the rights question matters to you, it is worth knowing before you build a habit around the feature, and it is part of why the same debate follows every AI reading tool.

How can it help an ADHD reader?

  • Who is this? A name reappears after two hundred pages. Highlight it and ask, instead of leaving the book to search, which is where reading sessions go to die.
  • Wait, what just happened? After a scene you skimmed while your mind was elsewhere, ask for a plain summary of the last chapter.
  • Coming back after a gap: Story So Far is the better tool for the big picture; Ask this Book is for the specific gap. Our Kindle Recaps dispatch covers Story So Far.

The value is staying on the page. Every trip to a browser to look something up is a chance to end up somewhere else. A question you can ask inside the book keeps the session alive.

What are the catches?

  • Kindle ebooks only, US only, English only, supported titles only, and for now the iOS app only.
  • AI answers can be wrong. If an answer surprises you, check the page it refers to before you trust it.
  • The whole-book option can spoil the ending.
  • Asking is easy enough to become a habit that replaces reading. If you notice you are reading the answers more than the book, close the panel and go back to externalizing the plot on paper.

What if you do not read on Kindle?

For print and audiobooks, the closest match is a recap app that works from your own copy. Magic Bookmark offers spoiler-free questions about the story so far, plus a character chat, for its supported titles on iPhone, at a per-book price after the first free book. General chatbots can answer questions too, but they do not know your page, so you have to tell them where you are and accept the risk that they spoil or invent.
