Distraction surface and ownership. The home screen sells you books, which is a shop attached to the one device that was supposed to have no shop. EPUB handling is second-class next to Kobo, library borrowing depends on your region, and your library remains conditional on Amazon.

The settings ritual, step by step
- Turn on airplane mode while reading. The store, recommendations and sync prompts need a connection; reading does not.
- Open your book, tap the top of the page, then Aa. Amazon's help pages list spacing between lines, paragraphs, words and characters, and margin size, alongside font and size. Raise line spacing one step first, then size.
- Pick one font and stop. OpenDyslexic is available in the Kindle apps per Amazon's accessibility page; use it if you prefer it, not because it is required.
- Charge it where you read, so it is never dead when you want it.
