The Libra combines the three things that matter most for a distractible reader: physical page-turn buttons, deep control over how the page looks, and library borrowing inside the device.
What it is
This current desk review assesses Kobo Libra Colour, model N428: an asymmetric colour e-ink reader with a button grip, waterproofing, a warm front light, native EPUB support, and Libby integration for library loans.
Where it earns its score
Format fit and reading comfort. Font, weight, size, line spacing, and margins are all adjustable for supported ebook formats, which is the cheapest legibility win there is. Where it loses points
The store is smaller than Amazon's and its audiobook offering is weaker, so there is no Whispersync-grade immersion setup here. Store browsing remains an escape hatch. We have not compared software polish hands-on.

Setting up a Kobo Libra for focus
- Sign in to your library first. Libby borrowing is built in for participating libraries in supported regions, so check compatibility and add your card before buying anything. The habit you want is "borrow, read, return", not "browse the store".
- Set the text once. Raise line spacing one step, then size one step, then widen the margins. Kobo's typography controls are deep; the point is to use them once and stop. See fonts and settings.
- Use the buttons. Turning pages with the physical buttons keeps your thumb off the screen edges, where accidental taps open menus.
- Turn Wi-Fi off while reading. Turn it on to borrow or sync, then off again.
- Keep it where you read. An e-reader on the bedside table gets opened. One in a drawer does not.
Before you buy: a quick checklist
- Does your library support borrowing on Kobo in your region? Check your library's Libby page.
- Do you own Kindle books you want to keep reading? They will not open on a Kobo.

- Do you lose the thread between sessions? The Libra has no built-in recap; plan for a session card or a recap tool.
What a Kobo will not do for you
It removes interruptions; it does not remember the story. If the problem is losing the plot rather than losing focus, pair the device with externalize the plot, a printable cast list, or a recap that stops at your page.
