Best read-it-later apps for ADHD readers

Readwise Reader is the pick if you want saved things to come back to you: highlights resurface on a schedule, which is the only feature on this page that fights forgetting. Matter is the pick if the queue itself is the problem — it is calmer, prettier, and lighter. Neither app fixes hoarding; a cap on the queue does.

Pocket is gone. Both apps below import a Pocket export, and both are better than the tab you left open in 2023.

Readwise Reader

SHELF IT

The power read-it-later: saves everything, reads everything aloud, resurfaces your highlights on schedule.

80/100 · $$ · Time to First Page: Not yet measured

Desk review · provisional

Reader is the power tool: articles, PDFs, EPUBs, newsletters, and YouTube transcripts in one inbox, with text-to-speech on everything and a spaced-repetition review that pushes your own highlights back at you. For a brain that reads a great paragraph and loses it by Thursday, that resurfacing is the whole product. The cost is a real subscription and a dense interface with a learning curve. Full review →

Matter

BORROW FIRST

The calm read-it-later: fewer features, better defaults, excellent article audio.

Matter is the beautiful one, and beauty is functional here: typography that makes starting pleasant, good text-to-speech with human-sounding voices, and far fewer knobs than Reader. It does less — thinner highlight tooling, a smaller export story — which is exactly why some readers finish more in it. Full review →

Every tool here is scored against a published rubric where distraction surface counts most, because the tool's job is getting out of the way. Verdicts are dated, prices are rechecked, and the flag next to every score tells you how deep the testing went. How we test →

Questions

What replaced Pocket?

Pocket shut down, and the two apps that absorbed most of its readers are Readwise Reader and Matter. Both import a Pocket export.

How do I stop hoarding articles?

Cap the queue and let it expire. An app that hides old saves, or a weekly rule that deletes anything untouched for a month, beats any tagging system.

Do these apps read articles aloud?

Yes, both include text-to-speech. It is the feature that turns a saved-article backlog into something you can clear while walking.
