Matter is a read-it-later app that treats typography as a feature, and for a reader who struggles to start, a page that looks inviting is a functional advantage rather than a cosmetic one.
What it does
Save articles and newsletters, read them in a beautifully set reading surface, or listen with text-to-speech voices that are among the best in this category. Highlighting exists, syncing works, and the app deliberately stops there.
Where it earns its score
Distraction surface and quality. There are far fewer knobs than Readwise Reader, which is exactly why some readers finish more in it. The listening experience is good enough that clearing a backlog on a walk becomes the default rather than an experiment.
Where it loses points
Retention support. Highlight tooling is thinner, resurfacing is not the centre of the product, and export is less flexible. If your goal is to use what you read later, Matter will not do that job for you. Format handling is narrower too — it is happiest with articles and newsletters.
Who should use it, and who should not
