Pocket shut down. What should ADHD readers use for saved articles now?
Reading aids: · ·
What happened to Pocket?
Mozilla's help page says it made "the difficult decision to shut down Pocket on July 8, 2025." After that date Pocket ran in export-only mode on the web until 12 November 2025, and the page now says: "As of November 12, 2025, user data export has been disabled, and all user data has been queued for permanent deletion." (Mozilla)
If you exported a file before the deadline, keep it: most read-it-later apps can import a list of links. If you did not, there is no way to get those saves back from Pocket.
Why does read-it-later matter for ADHD?
Saving an article feels like reading it. That is the trap. A read-it-later app with no rules becomes a guilt archive: hundreds of saves you meant to read, and a small jolt of shame every time you open it. Done well, the same app is a calm reading room: no ads, no sidebar, no comments, and a voice that reads to you when your eyes are done.
Which replacements do we score?
| App | Best for | Score and verdict | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Readwise Reader | People who save everything and want highlights resurfaced | 80/100, SHELF IT | Feature density; the first hour decides if it is a library or a junk drawer |
| Matter | People who want to read more and fiddle less | 76/100, BORROW FIRST | Fewer features and integrations by design |
The full comparison is Readwise Reader vs Matter, and the category hub is best read-it-later apps.
Three queue rules that keep it from becoming a guilt archive
- A cap. Pick a number, such as twenty. When you save the twenty-first article, archive the oldest unread one without reading it. If it mattered, it will come back.
- A weekly sweep. Once a week, five minutes: read one, listen to one, archive the rest of anything older than a month.
- Audio by default for long pieces. If an article is over fifteen minutes, send it to text-to-speech and listen on a walk. Our text-to-speech guide covers the voices.
Still have your export file? Bring only what you will read
- Open the export and skim the titles for five minutes. Mark the ones you would still click today.
- Import only those, or paste them in by hand if there are fewer than twenty.
- Archive the rest of the file somewhere you will not see it every day. It is a record, not a reading list.
- Set the queue cap in the new app before you save anything else.
Importing everything feels thorough, and it rebuilds the guilt archive on day one. A fresh queue of ten articles you want is worth more than four hundred you meant to want.
Do you need a replacement at all?
Maybe not. If your saves were mostly articles you never opened, try a month without a read-it-later app and see what you miss. Your browser's reading list or bookmarks may be enough. The point of the tool is reading, and you can read without it.
